Spring Sunshine

March

March is the ideal time to nip across the Atlantic and revel in consistent Caribbean trade winds, whether in the BVI or St Marten. Both host famous big regattas this month. Gorgeous cruising in clear water, epic racing, sandy beaches and great nightlife - something for everyone.

British Virgin Islands - Caribbean sailing at its absolute finest. The British Virgin Islands is blessed with almost year-round great sailing conditions, but March is a particularly good time to go - it’s the driest month of the year, the air is 26˚C, and thanks the reliable trade winds, the breeze is a sailor’s dream - ESE 10 knots. You’re also very safely outside the hurricane season, and avoiding the sweltering summer heat.

Reach across the Sir Francis Drake channel, and visit the spectacular Baths on Virgin Gorda. If you fancy a bit of competition, the BVI Spring Series Regatta rolls into town for the last week of the month.

St Martin/Sint Maarten - Ideal for the experienced sailor, the Heineken Regatta is one of yacht racing’s premier international events, and this cosmopolitan half-French, half-Dutch island really comes to life during it in early March. Charter a yacht for the regatta, or just soak up the feel-good vibes it brings to the island.

April

Spring’s in full swing by April, and while it’s not that warm in continental Europe, there is some wonderful cruising to be had further away. Pack your bags and head for North America, the Caribbean or the magical Seychelles.

Antigua - A classic year-round sailing area, Antigua makes our spring yacht charter list for one very specific reason, the sailing week that shows the island at its glorious best in late April.

Antigua Sailing Week puts most regattas to shame. For close racing, glorious weather and legendary parties, it simply can’t be beaten.

Charter for the event, or simply to soak up the feel-good factor. If racing’s not your thing, why not hire a sailing yacht or catamaran and let the wind fill your sails as you cruise to the remote island of Barbuda? Bliss.

Tonga - Venture to the distant shores of this Pacific kingdom, and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular cruising in impossibly clear waters.

Tonga is a fertile nation of vivid colours, from coral reefs and blue lagoons to white sand beaches, fringed with palm trees. The sailing combines the best bits of the BVIs and the Bahamas.

The rainy season has been and gone, and April temperatures average 27C and winds are in the 8-12kt sweet spot.

Vancouver - And now for something completely different. Vancouver and British Columbia offer yacht charters quite unlike anywhere else on planet earth. The cruising area is full of twisting fjords, towering mountain ranges, and swooping eagles.

By April, the shorefront forests are full of life, and whale watching season has just begun. Thousands of whales migrate through the febrile waters, and scores of wild salmon return home to spawn. A magical time to visit this magical place.

May

May marks the start of the European sailing season, as the Mediterranean begins to warm up and conditions are mild and comfortable. Get ahead of the crowds, and if you can dodge half term week, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful sailing and quiet bays.

Turkey - Thanks to its position in the south east of Europe, Turkey warms up earlier and has a longer sailing season than the rest of the Mediterranean.

This makes it superb for an early season yacht charter. By May, the air temperature has reached 23C, the winds are a mild SSW 9-11 knots and the coastline is bathed in 12 hours of sunlight every day.

With ancient ruins, line of sight coastal navigation and a mix of bustling towns and peaceful anchorages, Turkey’s at its shimmering best in May.

Dodecanese - The most southeasterly group of Greek islands shares a similar climate to the nearby Turquoise coast, which makes Kos and Rhodes superb starting points for early season yacht charters.

Dodecanese winds in May are generally light, and ideal for beginners and families.

Set sail from Kos and head for the rolling hills of southern Kalymnos and the gorgeous Ano Symi. Or pick up in Rhodes, and cross over to the unspoilt Tilos.

Why Spring Is Prime Sailing Season

Spring is a magical time for sailors. The transitional nature of the season creates dynamic and favourable weather conditions across the globe. You get to experience the best of both worlds: the lingering energy of winter winds and the promise of summer sun. It’s a time of awakening, not just for nature, but for the sailing community, with boatyards bustling and ports coming back to life.

Mediterranean Climate Windows

In the Mediterranean, spring marks the beginning of the sailing season. During March and April, you’ll find mild temperatures, clear skies, and steady winds, without the intense heat of the summer. The water is still refreshing, and the anchorages are quiet. By May, the sea has begun to warm up, and the weather becomes more settled, offering a perfect balance of comfortable conditions and fewer crowds. This is an ideal time to sail before the peak season begins.

Caribbean Trade Wind Patterns

While the Caribbean is a popular winter destination, spring offers some of the best sailing of the year. The trade winds remain consistent and reliable, but the winter crowds have started to dissipate. This means more space in popular anchorages and lower prices for your charter. Late spring is also the time when many sailors prepare for transatlantic crossings, creating a vibrant and exciting atmosphere in the marinas.

Springtime Wildlife Encounters

Spring is a time of migration and renewal for marine wildlife, offering incredible opportunities for observation. In the Pacific Northwest, you can witness the gray whale migration, while the Azores become a hotspot for whale and dolphin watching. In many parts of the world, spring is also the breeding season for seabirds, adding another layer of life and energy to your sailing in spring experience.

Top Spring Sailing Destinations in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean comes alive in the spring, offering a perfect start to the European sailing season. The weather is mild, the winds are generally predictable, and the landscapes are lush and green. It’s the perfect time to explore ancient ruins, enjoy local cuisine, and experience the authentic culture of the region before the summer rush.

Greek Islands: Cyclades and Dodecanese

The Greek Islands are a classic choice for spring sailing. The Dodecanese, with their proximity to the Turkish coast, warm up early in the season, making them ideal for a March or April charter. A Dodecanese yacht charter offers a fascinating blend of Greek and Turkish culture, with ancient ruins and quiet fishing villages to explore. The Cyclades, while more challenging due to the Meltemi winds in the summer, are often calmer in the spring, allowing for more relaxed island-hopping.

Croatian Dalmatian Coast

The Dalmatian Coast of Croatia is another fantastic spring sailing destination. The weather is pleasant, the seas are calm, and the marinas are less crowded than in the summer. This is a great time to explore the historic cities of Split and Dubrovnik, as well as the stunning islands of Hvar, Brač, and Vis. The shoulder season prices also make a Croatian charter an excellent value.

Turkish Turquoise Coast

Thanks to its position in the southeast of Europe, Turkey has a longer sailing season than the rest of the Mediterranean, making sailing in Turkey superb for an early season charter. By May, the air temperature has reached 23°C, the winds are a mild SSW 9-11 knots, and the coastline is bathed in 12 hours of sunlight every day. With ancient ruins, line-of-sight coastal navigation, and a mix of bustling towns and peaceful anchorages, Turkey’s at its shimmering best in May.

Caribbean and Atlantic Spring Sailing Routes

The Caribbean in spring is a sailor’s dream. The weather is perfect, the trade winds are blowing, and the vibrant energy of the regatta season is in the air. This is the great time to experience the best of Caribbean sailing, whether you’re looking for competitive racing or relaxed cruising.

British Virgin Islands in Late Spring

A BVI yacht charter offers Caribbean sailing at its absolute finest. The British Virgin Islands are blessed with almost year-round great sailing conditions, but March is a particularly good time to go; it’s the driest month of the year, the air is 26˚C, and thanks to the reliable trade winds, the breeze is a sailor’s dream. You’re also very safely outside the hurricane season. Reach across the Sir Francis Drake channel and visit the spectacular Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Leeward Islands Passages

The Leeward Islands are the heart of the Caribbean regatta season in the spring. St. Martin/Sint Maarten hosts the Heineken Regatta in early March, one of yacht racing’s premier international events. Antigua Sailing Week in late April is another legendary event, famous for its close racing, glorious weather, and epic parties. You can charter a yacht to join the racing or simply soak up the feel-good vibes from the comfort of your own boat.

Transatlantic Spring Crossings

For the ultimate spring sailing adventure, a transatlantic crossing is a rite of passage for many sailors. Spring is the traditional time to make the journey from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, taking advantage of the favourable winds and weather. This is a serious undertaking requiring careful planning and preparation, but the sense of accomplishment and the experience of being at sea for weeks on end is truly unforgettable.

Pacific and Coastal Spring Opportunities

For those looking to venture off the beaten path, the Pacific and the temperate coastal zones of North America offer unique and rewarding spring sailing trips.

South Pacific and Southeast Asia

Venture to the distant shores of Tonga, and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular cruising in impossibly clear waters. The rainy season has passed, and April temperatures average 27°C with winds in the 8-12kt sweet spot. In Southeast Asia, the spring marks the transition between monsoons, offering a window of calm weather for exploring the stunning coastlines of Thailand and Malaysia.

Pacific Northwest: British Columbia to Puget Sound

British Columbia, Canada offers yacht charters quite unlike anywhere else on planet earth.

Sailing Trip Logistics and Spring-Specific Preparation

Planning a spring sailing trip requires some specific considerations. From charter availability to the right gear, a little preparation will ensure your spring sail is a smooth one.

Charter Availability and Pricing Patterns

Spring is considered the “shoulder season” in many destinations, which means you can often find great deals on a bareboat yacht charter or a skippered yacht charter. The cost is generally lower than in the peak summer months, and there is more availability. However, for popular regattas and events, you’ll need to book well in advance.

Essential Spring Sailing Gear

Packing for a spring sailing trip requires some versatility. The weather can be changeable, so it’s important to pack layers. A good waterproof jacket and trousers are essential, as are non-marking deck shoes. Even in warm climates, the evenings can be cool, so be sure to pack a fleece or a light sweater. And don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen; the spring sun can be surprisingly strong.

Choosing Your Spring Sailing Adventure

Spring is a season of endless possibilities for sailors. Whether you want to learn the ropes in a sailing school, join a flotilla, or embark on a solo adventure, there’s a spring sailing experience that’s right for you. Consider your skill level, budget, and what you want to get out of your trip. Do you want to relax and soak up the sun, or do you want to challenge yourself with some competitive racing? Whatever your preference, this guide should help you start planning your perfect springtime sailing getaway.
